Originally a congregation of the American Lutheran Church, Good Shepherd was established as a mission congregation in December 1962 and became part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America at its formation in 1988. The church had been planted to intentionally serve the military families at the former Brunswick Naval Air Station and Topsham Radar Station, a history that helped shape our active involvement in the life of the greater Brunswick area. Because our members were constantly deploying overseas or being transferred to new duty stations, Good Shepherd became known as a compassionate, caring community in Christ helping to ease the strains of life transitions and adapt to ever changing circumstances. That flexibility and compassion was put to the test with the closures of first the Radar Station and then BNAS.
Now those traits are helping us reach out to Bowdoin College students, newly arrived retirees and others seeking a supportive community. In 2013 Good Shepherd members helped found Churches Working Together, an ecumenical group of six area congregations that seeks to display the unity we share as Christians. This group began the Rejoicing Spirits ministry in Brunswick and Good Shepherd members continue to be active in leadership and support of this ministry.
